The London Design Festival in September of this year was a veritable candy-store of tantalising interiors, cutting edge design, innovation and style. The greatest of international talent was showcased at a variety of events throughout London.

Cellar Maison exhibited at both Decorex and the Restaurant Design Show. For each show, we installed two Wine Walls from our signature range, plus a limited edition, Wine Carousel  – Fully stocked with wine from The New Zealand Cellar, just to offer the full experience.

It was a real honour to have the chance to meet so many people from a fascinating array of backgrounds, all connected in some way by the love of fine design and wine.

THE COMPETITION

During the two shows, we ran a competition in conjunction with our collaborating partners at Gayan and Nathan. Gayan & Nathan offer a unique service that seeks to ‘map’ their clients’ palates and define an individual taste profile that is then used to inform future selections of wine.  They offer professional wine advisory and buying services, as well as great fun events where you can truly learn to understand your palate and wine preferences.

THE PRIZE

On offer in the competition was a private 1-2-1 Palate Profiling Consultation with Master of Wine Marina Gayan of Gayan & Nathan and a case of wine selected by Marina based on the winner’s personal palate preferences.

THE WINNER

We had just over 200 entrants who left their details with us and we are pleased to announce the winner, Lucy Ford of Goose Design Interiors, who has now been informed.

English wine makers are forging ahead in export wine sales with figures looking to exceed £100m this year according to The Guardian’s article featured below.

With the growing demand for English wine, there is a push in Sussex led by local wine makers to gain “Protected Designation of Origin“status by the European Union. A successful result will mean the name Sussex being used just as Bordeaux or Champagne are. Protected status is would mean significant benefit for Sussex wine makers and considerable kudos in the world wine stage.

The Guardian have released a fascinating article explaining the finer points of the push for protected status in Sussex and profiling some key people passionate about making this a reality.

Using the term: “A Sussex,”  as we do for a Bordeaux could soon be a reality. Cellar Maison are waiting with anticipation for a positive result and continue to learn about and support local English wine makers and encourage our clients and wine collectors to explore the very attractive vintages coming from Sussex and elsewhere for their cellars.

A couple of vineyards and wine makers you may be interested in looking at include:

http://www.stophamvineyard.co.uk – Wine maker, Simon Woodhead features heavily in The Guardian article and as you’ll see from the beautiful website, they are producing some exquisite wines and have special winery and vineyard tours by arrangement.

https://www.bolneywineestate.com  – Another stunning site that makes you want to go there immediately, taste wine, talk, eat, visit the local pub as recommended by wine maker and wine lover, Sam Linter. Being the daughter of the founders, it’s a true family affair as you’ll read.

A visit to the Sussex wine region is a highly recommended weekend away if you’re based in London or another feasible distance. The local scene is very likely to surprise and delight. Let us know your recommendations and experiences if you’re there and as always, please share your wine collecting tips and finds.

Ever vibrant, London offers a vast array of choices when it comes to wine events and tastings.  The trick is seeking them out, tracking them down and getting in and enjoying what’s on our doorsteps in this multi-faceted, exciting city. Here at Cellar Maison we are always on the lookout for new and interesting places to recommend for learning about collecting wine, and of course, for great food and wine.

Here’s one to check out – The events and wine dinners at Vivat Bacchus are held frequently at their London Bridge and Farringdon restaurants and are full of fun, information and variety. There is also a fabulous menu to explore including an impressive cheese selection.

Their Club Carnivore is founded on three simple rules:

1. Red meat ONLY

2. Red wine ONLY

3. Wine served in MAGNUMS or larger

….What’s not to like? Two Club Carnivore meals are coming up next week – check the site for details.

Coming up next week also is a Pinotage night in London Bridge and a Pairing Wine and Food at Farringdon. Great value for money, lots of fun and full of information, these nights are winners.

Cellar Maison - Exquisite ways to give you a home wine cellar for living and life

Cellar Maison – Exquisite ways to give you a home wine cellar for living and life

As a continuation of our Nelson wine tour tales, we are sharing a very enjoyable excursion to the stunning Marlborough wine region at the top of the South Island of New Zealand. This was part of the break to the sunshine of the Southern Hemisphere some of us in the Cellar Maison enjoyed in January this year.

Marlborough had become synonymous with Sauvignon Blanc over many years of top quality, distinctive wine making with this grape varietal. Now there is a very exciting expansion into some wonderful wines that are generating significant interest world-wide. Riesling in particular and some of the aromatics such as stunning Gewurztraminer were favourites for us. We also enjoyed our fair share of Pinot Noir.

It wasn’t only about wine however. It was all about the food too. Marlborough offers a world-class winery and cellar door experience throughout its extensive grape growing region. And collectively as a region they make it very easy to enjoy with wine trails, tours, accommodation and of course, wonderful, regional produce that showcases the seasons and compliments the wine.

We had a day trip for tastings along the convenient few roads with vineyards dotted appealingly close together. The tastings were informative, often delivered by the wine maker or owner of the vineyard and therefore laced with true passion and grit that makes an event to truly enjoy. When it came to lunch, there were a few good options of cellar door venues that also offered restaurants. After much browsing and reviewing of menus in the days leading up to our trip, we settled on Allan Scott Family Winemakers and booked a table – sensibly as it’s very popular and we certainly didn’t want to risk the dreaded “Missing-Out-On-Chosen-Restaurant” crisis.

Allan Scott consistently produce impressive wine and they have created a stunning space to taste, buy wine and dine. We sat in the courtyard of their Twelve Trees restaurant, in the dappled shade with views onto their vegetable and herb garden and the elegant vines draping rustically above to provide reprieve from the dry summer heat.

The menu is heavily weighted towards local produce and seafood which is effortlessly compatible with the wine from grapes grown only metres away from where we sat. The entrée of local Havelock mussels presented as a taster was a sensation of lemongrass, red kimchi, capers and Japanese mayonnaise, respectively, was delightful and worked well with our glass of Gewurztraminer.

Unable to choose, we decided to share our main courses….solving possible food envy issues.

The steamed salmon fillet was divine. Soft, velvet flakes of perfect fish complimented by the seasonal, summer vegetables and herbs. The Pinot Gris definitely made a happy partnership.

Finally, the spectacular New Zealand lamb; Pilpelchuma marinated and smoked lamb shoulder rack, sweet & sour carrot, cous cous, almond sumac, yoghurt, and grass jelly – yes, grass jelly, which was delightful – surprising and not at all odd. A sleek Pinot Noir was a great choice and light enough to enjoy at lunch without leaving us in a slump for the afternoon.

It’s worth putting in some research before your Marlborough wine tour and there are some great resources to do this online such as this site http://www.wine-marlborough.co.nz/wineries/ that we used.

If you’re staying put in good old England for the moment, why not explore some Marlborough wine from your favourite local wine merchant. There are certainly some excellent Marlborough and Nelson wine choices to cellar as well. If you have suggestions please do share and tell us what you’re targeting at present.
